     50 metres of a well, borehole or spring
     10 metres of controlled water eg: open drain, manhole cover, river, stream or lake
     where the tank vent is not visible from its fill point
     where tank capacity exceeds 2500 litres
    or where any potential spillage could run over ground into controlled waters.

A poly tank has to be supported across the whole base but with most modern boilers can be installed at ground level. Normally the only exception is Aga''s which still require a gravity feed. Any base alterations can be part of the installation process which would include transfer of oil to the new tank and removal of the old tank.
